NCI's Funded Research Portfolio (NFRP)NCI's Funded Research Portfolio (NFRP) website is temporarily unavailable as it is being modernized to provide the public with an improved tool to understand the research NCI supports. The updated site is expected to be available in December 2024. If you need assistance with any data in the interim, please contact: NCIFundedPortfolio@mail.nih.gov
ABOUT NFRP: NFRP is designed to present NCI's investments across different areas of cancer research. When reviewing data about NCI spending, please note that cancer research does not fit neatly into discrete categories. Advances in one area can have profound effects in other areas, and it is difficult to quantify these important overlaps for budget reporting purposes. This is especially true for basic research into cancer, which accounts for nearly half of NCI's spending. Basic research is often not specific to a particular cancer type, or to a specific population; rather, it seeks to understand the fundamental biological mechanisms underpinning all cancers. This basic research investment is not fully captured in the funding levels reported in individual disease types and research topics. The topical project lists presented in NFRP represent a look back at projects funded in a given fiscal year through a rigorous peer review process.
ABOUT NCI: NCI seeks to fund the best science to reduce the burden of cancer through greater understanding of the ways to prevent and treat the disease as well as supporting cancer survivors throughout their lives. NCI does not prospectively set funding targets or set aside funds for projects and programs in specific research categories or disease types. To make research funding decisions, NCI relies heavily on scientific peer review in which highly trained external scientists review research proposals and judge them on factors such as scientific merit, potential impact, and likelihood of success. |
