Abstract | |||
" The major goals of our family studies are to: Define the natural history of cancer in families; identify potential precursor lesions for cancer; quantify the risk of cancer in family members; identify susceptibility genes for specific cancers in families; estimate penetrance of cancer in mutation carriers; correlate genotype with phenotype; identify possible modifier genes and environmental exposures that alter risk in family members; evaluate gene-gene and gene-environment interactions; develop educational materials for family members and health care professionals specific to the familial cancer; and follow families long term to assess whether cancer rates change with recommended interventions. Currently, we have active family studies in melanoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chordoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, neurofibromatosis type 2, Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, and hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma. This project includes Brain and other parts of the nervous system except NF, Breast, Colon/Rectum, Corpus uterus, Lung, trachea, bronchus, and pleura, Neurofibromatosis, Pediatric disease categories.
