This investigation evaluates biological factors that may be responsible for weight gain among women with breast cancer who are treated with adjuvant chemotherapy (AC). The prospective study of 22 women with newly diagnosed stage I, II, or IIIA breatst cancer who undergo AC measured the following at three timepoints ( 1) prior to AC, 2) at completion of AC, and, 3) 6 months post-AC) : anthropometry, abdominal CT, DXA, total energy expenditure (via doubly labeled water), metabolic rate, physical activity (by questionnaires and accelerometer measurements), diet, and serologic biomarkers including hormones (e.g., estrogens, androgens, thyroid), growth factors (e.g., IGFs), and adipokines (e.g., leptin, adiponectin). |
