Abstract | |||
The etiology of brain tumors is not well understood, and, amidst this uncertainty has arisen public concern that the use of cellular telephones and other sources of exposure to electromagnetic fields might cause cancer. The present study had the narrow objective of addressing the cellular phone question and the more general goal of clarifying important environmental and genetic determinants for this poorly understood group of neoplasms. Additional factors under consideration include workplace exposures to non-ionizing radiation and a variety of chemical agents, family history of brain and other tumors, possible genetic determinants of susceptibility, home appliance use, consumption of selected micronutrients and N-nitroso compounds or their precursors, medical and dental exposure to ionizing radiation, reproductive history and hormonal exposures, viruses, and preexisting medical conditions. No associations of brain tumor risk with use of cellular telephones were seen, nor with occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields or chlorinated solvents. |
