Abstract | |||
Case-control studies of classical KS in Sicily, Rome and Naples. The Branch completed a case-control study (KCC) that revealed significant associations of classical KS with history of asthma, use of topical corticosteroid medications, infrequent bathing, and especially non-smoking. Analyses in progress are evaluating the risk of KS associated with KSHV/HHV8 viremia, KSHV/HHV8 antibody titer, blood count distributions, and polymorphisms in genes related to immunity and inflammation. The Branch has completed second case-control study (KCC2) encompassing the population of Sicily to validate the previous findings and to generate new hypotheses on the risk of KS among persons who have antibodies against KSHV/HHV8, on the risk of KSHV/HHV8 seropositivity, and on the risk of active KSHV/HHV8 infection. Primary hypotheses are focused on host genetic susceptibility, endogenous clinical conditions (such as asthma and allergy), and exogenous exposures (cigarette smoking, insect bites and contact with certain plants, water and soil) that are postulated to affect KSHV/HHV8 activation, dissemination, and disease induction. |
