Abstract | |||
In 1982, the REB, initiated a nationwide cohort study of all cancer incidence and mortality among 146,022 U. S. radiologic technologists. The cohort with 73% females, and very high response rates offers a rare opportunity to study effects of occupational protracted low- to moderate-dose radiation exposure on breast, thyroid, hematopoietic and other cancers. All other cancer and non-cancer serious disease outcomes are also being evaluated in relation to protracted low-to-moderate dose exposures. We expanded the scope of the study to include risks for cancers in relation to occupational and personal diagnostic examinations involving exposure to ionizing radiation, as well as studies of skin and other cancers in relation to radiation exposure and levels of UVR exposure and other exposures. During the past year, an historical dose reconstruction effort was completed to estimate individual annual occupational radiation doses to 12 different organs. A fourth survey core questionnaire was mailed to 94,000 living technologists and completed by about 54,000. An abbreviated survey will be sent to persistent non-responders. Two work history questionnaire modules were administered during the coming year to obtain additional information for technologists who worked with fluoroscopically-guided and radioisotope procedures. Cancer radiation dose-response risk analyses are underway." |
