Abstract | |||
The purpose of this investigation is to extend follow-up to ascertain cancer diagnoses and deaths through the present time among women who donated serum to the Columbia, MO serum bank beginning in the mid 1970s. The Columbia, MO serum bank was established as part of the National Cancer Institute's Biological Markers Project to identify serum markers for breast cancer. Patients have been traced and asked to complete a short questionnaire regarding subsequent development of cancers. A linkage of cohort members with the National Death Index has also been completed. Self-reports of breast cancers have been validated through retrieval of medical records, and attempts are underway to retrieve similar information for self reports of other cancers. Data relevant to the ovarian and endometrial cancers that have developed among cohort members have used as part of a collaborative analysis of hormonal predictors of risk and several manuscripts have been published. Analyses are currently concentrating on the breast cancer endpoints, with approximately 300 incident cases having occurred among non-hormone users. Assays have been conducted for mullerian inhibiting substance and adiponectin levels, and hormone assays will hopefully be conducted in early 2009. |
