Abstract | |||
Linked birth-cancer registry databases from many regions will allow NCI to better evaluate cancer in relation to gestational/neonatal factors. Such studies are an efficient way to evaluate rare diseases such as cancer, for which a population-based registry exists. Results of these studies compliment more costly case-control or follow up studies; they provide results in a shorter time frame and maximize use of existing public health data. They also avoid possible biases that may occur due to loss to follow-up, referral patterns, or response bias that may be present in interview studies. The network of researchers identified as a result of this Planning Project may ultimately develop into a consortium that would help foster further collaborations allowing large population-based cancer studies in the US. Topics that may be further examined within this network include environmental exposures using additional existing geographically-referenced databases, inclusion of other types of cancer, and investigation of the possibility of building a DNA repository of population-based cases and controls in regions where newborn screening dried blood spots may be accessed. |
