Abstract | |||
A case-control study of breast cancer has been completed in Warsaw and Lodz, Poland. The study is investigating a variety of potential risk factors for this disease and their interactions with genetic markers, assessed through collected blood and buccal samples. The study also involves collection of urine and dust samples to assess hormones and chemicals which may be important in breast carcinogenesis. Given the large proportion of Polish women employed in the workforce, the study provides a unique opportunity for assessing relationships with occupational risk factors. Anthropometric measurements are also being taken and subjects asked to wear accelerometers for a weeks' time; this information will enable evaluation of breast cancer in relation to energy expenditure and body mass. Approximately 2,200 incident breast cancer cases and an equal number of population controls have been interviewed (approximate response rates of 80%). Most subjects who agreed to an interview also agreed to other study components. Interview data are now being analyzed. DNA has been extracted from the collected blood samples and testing for a variety of genetic polymorphisms is underway. Tissue samples are being used to build microarrays. Approximately one year after the breast study began, the study was expanded to include endometrial and ovarian cancer cases. Additional controls were selected for these cases. Similar to the breast cancer study, subjects were asked to consent to an extensive interview and to provide blood and buccal samples. The study was recently completed and includes information on approximately 550 endometrial cancer and 400 ovarian cancer patients. |
