In 1982, the REB, initiated a nationwide cohort study of all cancer incidence and mortality among 146,022 U. S. radiologic technologists. The cohort with 73% females, and very high response rates offers a rare opportunity to study effects of occupational protracted low- to moderate-dose radiation exposure on breast, thyroid, hematopoietic and other cancers. All other cancer and non-cancer serious disease outcomes are also being evaluated in relation to protracted low-to-moderate dose exposures. We expanded the scope of the study to include risks for cancers in relation to occupational and personal diagnostic examinations involving exposure to ionizing radiation, as well as studies of skin and other cancers in relation to radiation exposure and levels of UVR exposure and other exposures. Exposure response analyses are evaluating work history and estimated organ doses in relation to cancer and other serious disease risks among technologists performing fluoroscopically-guided interventional procedures and nuclear medicine procedures. |
