Abstract | |||
Formaldehyde exposure occurs among pathologists, anatomists and workers in the funeral industry. It is also a ubiquitous environmental chemical that causes nasal carcinomas in rats. We showed that workers in the U.S. funeral industry have excesses of malignancies of the lymphatic and hematopoietic systems, including myeloid leukemia and multiple myeloma. Our studies of embalming practice identified work activities associated with high exposure to formaldehyde, which increased the risks of nasal epithelial and lymphocyte micronuclei and decreased lymphocyte O6-alkylguanine DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) activity. The results of the case-control investigation in the funeral industry to assess the relationship of work practices and formaldehyde exposure with risk of leukemia and related disorders was published in 2009. |
