Abstract | |||
Special funding for this project was obtained from the sale of breast cancer stamps. The primary aims relate to understanding biologic correlates of dense breasts--a major risk factor for breast cancer. Special emphasis is being placed on assessing tissue markers. The study was conducted at the University of Vermont Breast Cancer Screening Consortium Center and recruited women undergoing breast biopies, some of whom were subsequently referred for breast resections. Biologic samples from this latter group of women are being used for biomarker discovery, which then will be tested among the smaller materials derived the larger group of women undergoing breast biopsies. It is anticipated that initial interest will focus on markers that may be important in allowing for development of stromal components in the breast, as well as other markers that may be influenced by a variety of hormonal factors. |
