Abstract | |||
We conducted a population-based case control study of adult glioma, and adenocarcinomas of the stomach and esophagus in the 66 counties of eastern Nebraska. Cases were white men and women ages 21 or older who had been newly diagnosed with glioma (ICD-O codes 938-948) or adenocarcinoma of the stomach or esophagus between July 1, 1988, and June 30, 1993. Cases were limited to white residents of eastern Nebraska during 1983 1986 because the control subjects were selected during that time period and other ethnic groups had been excluded because of expected small numbers. Controls were selected randomly from controls in a previous population-based case control study of hematopoietic cancers in eastern Nebraska and were re-interviewed at the time of the case interviews. A total of 170 stomach cancer cases, 137 esophageal cancer cases, 251 glioma cases and 502 controls completed interviews with overall response rates of 79%, 88%, 89%, and 83% respectively. The primary aims of both studies were to evaluate agricultural exposures and risk of these cancers. Specifically we evaluated occupational exposure to pesticides and drinking water and dietary sources of nitrate. The study has contributed questionnaire data on smoking, alcohol, and BMI to pooled analyses in the BEACON consortium. |
